An initiative by the Co-ordination Centre for Integrated Coastal Zone Management

The almost linear coastline we see today is manmade.

Small islands off the coast were eliminated by filling the tidal inlets that existed between them.

Man also defined the outline of the coast by means of artificial coastal defence techniques: further narrowing and erosion of the beach were prevented by the construction of wooden and stone groins and seawalls. The latter were originally made of packed earth, later of stone and concrete. In this way, more than half the Belgian coastline was protected by one or several manmade reinforcements.
