The Belgian Coast lies in the heart of the European core area, on the southern tip of the North Sea. It is a densely populated area with important economic and tourist activities.
The coastline comprises broad sandy beaches that are mostly connected to a narrow dune belt. Inland lies a flat and vast polder landscape; on the seaward side, on the shallow continental shelf, we find numerous sandbanks.

The extensive road system provides easy and efficient access to the coast from a vast hinterland comprising cities such as Brussels, Cologne, Lille, Amsterdam, Paris and London.
The built-up shoreline and the linear traffic infra-structure make the coast resemble a narrow, unbroken conurbation, only sparsely interrupted by empty spaces.
