An initiative by the Co-ordination Centre for Integrated Coastal Zone Management

Over the past few years a number of initiatives have been developed for energy generation at sea by means of wind turbines.

Because of the relatively small surface area of the Belgian territorial sea and the many restricting factors, the possibilities for offshore wind energy parks are very limited. Taking into account the other functions of the maritime area, the Belgian government has defined a specific zone for wind energy generation.

In view of this, there are plans to construct a first wind turbine park on the Thornton Bank, located about 30 km off the coast.
