Good organization, control and monitoring are absolutely necessary if the numerous, widely diverging activities in the relatively small area are to run smoothly.
An extensive network of measuring sensors, navigation systems and information sources ensures that all activities can safely take place together and in proximity of one another.
Various scientific research institutes provide the necessary information and advice to support policy decisions.

» Research at sea
Research at sea is mainly carried out on board the research ships Belgica, Ter Streep and Zeeleeuw.
These ships are used for scientific missions and everyday measuring tasks as well as for urgent assignments and control missions.

» Monitoring from the air
The aim of most flights is to track down polluters and to monitor the observance of fishery legislation.
In addition to this, the sandbank dynamism, the sand and gravel extraction, the dumping of dredged material in the sea, the behavior of sea mammals, the seasonal algae growth as well as the recreational activities are monitored and observed.
